The Joyous Festival of Ridvan: An Introduction
Ridvan is one of the most joyous festivals in the Baha'i Faith. The twelve days celebrated annually from April 21st to May 2nd commemorates the momentous occasion when Baha'u'llah, the founder of the Baha'i Faith, declared His mission to a small group of followers in a garden called Ridvan (pronounced rez-vahn, which means “Paradise” in Arabic) just outside of Baghdad.
During these twelve days, Baha'u'llah announced that He was the Messenger of God for this age, and that His teachings were meant to bring unity and peace to the world. He also declared His mission to the world during this time, calling for the establishment of a new world order based on spiritual principles.
The joyous atmosphere of Ridvan is palpable as Baha'is all over the world come together to celebrate this historic event. This special time is marked by prayers, music, and community gatherings, where friends and family come together to share their love and devotion for Baha'u'llah and His teachings.
The spirit of Ridvan is one of unity, love, and peace, and it serves as a reminder of the importance of striving for these ideals in our daily lives. It is a time to reflect on the teachings of Baha'u'llah and to renew our commitment to building a better world, one filled with harmony and justice.
Ridvan is a truly joyous occasion, and its message of love and unity is one that resonates with people of all backgrounds and beliefs.
In honor of the Festival of Ridvan, here is a poem celebrating the significance of this special time:
The Festival of Ridvan, a time of joy, A time to reflect, to renew and employ. The teachings of Baha'u'llah, a call to action, To build a world of love, of compassion.
For twelve days, in that sacred space, The message of God filled every place. Baha'u'llah's voice, clear and true, Announcing a mission, a message anew.
For unity is the key, the cornerstone, To build a world where all are known. Where diversity is celebrated and embraced, And every soul is valued and placed!
